We got ICED!

What fun! On Monday, we visited the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando with my sister-in-law and her family to see the final day of the annual ICE! exhibit.

ICE! is a very cool (9 degrees, to be exact) “Florida Fridge” of 2,000,000 lbs of ice which has been shaped and carved by a group of 40 craftsmen from China. It includes clear, colored, and white ice with holiday and Florida themes, and two slides.

Just before entering the exhibit, guests were issued *lovely* blue calf-length parkas (in addition to being advised to wear long pants, close-toed shoes and gloves) as you can see in this photo taken of LBF and #2 daughter at the entrance to the “Toyland” section:

The exhibit was 18,000 square feet (man, I wouldn’t want that power bill!) and the clear ice was maded with purified water so clear it compares to Waterford crystal.

Lots of the carvings had electric lights embedded in them, and the exhibit was illuminated throughout by theater lighting.

LBF’s hubby and #1 daughter:

Despite it’s size, it didn’t take long to go through the exhibit - girls would have enjoyed sliding down the ice slide a few more times, but even in parkas, scarves, hats, gloves, etc. the 9-degree temperature doesn’t encourage loitering. We really enjoyed seeing it, though, as 3 of the 4 of us (I’ll leave you to guess which 3) have never even seen snow, much less experienced cold to that degree!

After the exhibit, we walked around the Gaylord Palms - their atrium itself could take the better part of a day to explore at 4.5 acres. They use a “best of Florida” theme and have devoted different areas of the atrium to famous Florida landmarks from Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine

to Key West.

It’s really quite lovely, and we all enjoyed dinner in Sunset Sam’s Fish Camp - a Key West themed restaurant.

On the way back home we stopped at the HUGE Outdoor World (Bass Pro Shop) a paradise for any outdoorsman - and the highlight of the day for the guys with our group!

We live about 60 miles from this area of Orlando, and we haven’t been to the “attractions” in years, so it was a fun day for us - just thought I’d share a few of the pix!

Happy New Year 2006!

I’ve been mainly incommunicado for the last couple weeks - around our house we’re usually healthy, but for some reason, we can’t seem to keep healthy for more than a week since Thanksgiving! Daughters and I are rebounding from the latest cold right now - hoping to feel immensely better by tomorrow, and then I’ll try to start off the New Year with some great, insightful, thought-provoking post, LOL. But ’til we’re all better, this is just a quick wish for a great New Year to all my readers.

Oh no! Kiddos Sick with Flu and I’m Facing Extinction!

So, this has been a rough holiday week - daughters been sick since last Monday, slowly recovering . . . and I sign on this afternoon to find that I’m no longer a Large Mammal in the TTLB Ecosystem - but an Adorable Little Rodent! But it seems I’m in good company - Lisa Renee over at Liberal Common Sense has a great post about the shake-up and mammoth mass extinction, and a memorial tribute to those who’ve got to creep back up out of the slime.

Personality Check . . .

Have you ever taken the Jung-Myers-Briggs Personality Profile? It’s really an interesting profile. Not everyone who takes it will agree with the results, but in my case I’ve taken it a number of different times over the years and it always comes out the same. I am an INTJ which stands for “Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging”. According to my “scores” I am a “mastermind rational”.

It is in their abilities that Masterminds differ from the other Rationals, while in most of their attitudes they are just like the others. However there is one attitude that sets them apart from other Rationals: they tend to be much more self-confident than the rest, having, for obscure reasons, developed a very strong will. They are rather rare, comprising no more than, say, one percent of the population.
